Mark's philosophy is that the lawyer should be the
indispensable business partner in the organization, development,
and realization of the entrepreneurial vision of developing companies.
Mark realizes that one of the largest obstacles facing most startups
is obtaining necessary initial funding. He understands that the
availability of local capital is what sets successful technology
communities apart. To fill this important role around the Monterey
Bay, Mark co-founded the Monterey Bay Angels (MBA), which provides
local seed round funding to startups and advisory board and bridge
financing resources to local entrepreneurs. Mark serves as one of
the facilitators for the MBA and sits on its screening committee,
which reviews and screens potential deal flow.
Mark was an incorporator and presided over the organizational
meeting of the Lighthouse Venture Forum, a local nonprofit corporation,
which supports the technology industry around the Monterey Bay.
Mark also acts as legal counsel for the local community development
corporation, and provides important pro bono transactional services
to many minority startup businesses. These areas of practice complement
the transactional and personal needs of the client.
Mark is a lifelong resident of the Monterey Bay. He
attended the York school in Monterey and received his B.A. from
the University of California at Santa Barbara. In 1981, Mark received
his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of
the Law. He practiced with the Santa Barbara firm of Mullen &
Henzell for three years. Mark joined Grunsky, Ebey, Farrar &
Howell in 1986.
Mark is active in the community. He co-chairs the
Water Resource Committee of the community based planning effort
of Action
Pajaro Valley and is working on technology to link and mesh
various planning and governmental efforts to address local water
issues. Mark founded and provides pro bono legal services for the
Salinas Valley Junior Golf Association and served as its President.
He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the York
School and acts as its Development Committee Chair. Mark has
served on the Board of Directors and has participated as a Big Brother
in the Big Brother Program. He was twice President of the Monterey
County Chapter of the American Diabetes Association. He also served
as President of the local Lions and Rotary Clubs. He was twice Grand
Knight of the Watsonville Knights of Columbus. Mark has served as
the Chair of the Watsonville Economic Development Council. He maintains
his teaching credential and taught Transactional Law at Monterey
Peninsula College.
Mark lives on the foggy Monterey Peninsula and enjoys
fly fishing and tying, alpine mountaineering, marathons, and golf
where he manages to maintain a 5 handicap.
