Fred Ebey received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley in 1958, and graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law, UC Berkeley, in 1962. He was admitted to the California Bar in January, 1963 at which time he was appointed as a Deputy District Attorney for Alameda County where he served for two years until he was selected as Counsel to the California State Senate Judiciary Committee. In 1966 the Chairman of the State Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Donald L. Grunsky, invited Ebey to become an associate in the Grunsky Law Firm. Ebey has remained with the Grunsky Law Firm for more than 40 years and is presently its senior shareholder.
Ebey has served as lead counsel in over 200 jury trials that have gone to verdict, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in a wide variety of cases in both federal and state court. It is believed that his client recovered the largest jury verdict in Santa Cruz County history against an insurance company in a bad faith case.
In addition to his extensive trial court practice, Mr. Ebey has a broad scope of appellate experience, having appeared before the California Supreme Court and four of the six California Court of Appeal districts. In addition, he has argued before the U.S. Court of Appeal (Ninth Circuit) and has submitted briefs to the United States Supreme Court. When he is not busy representing clients, Mr. Ebey frequently serves as a Mediator, Arbitrator, Special Master and Discovery Referee in a wide variety of cases.
Mr. Ebey was the first Santa Cruz County attorney elected to membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates and the only Central Coast County attorney who has attained ABOTA’s highest ranking of Diplomate. He served as the president of the San Francisco chapter of ABOTA in 2005 and is presently a member of ABOTA’s National Board of Directors.
Mr. Ebey is one of only two active Santa Cruz County attorneys elected to membership in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers whose membership is limited to less than one percent of the attorneys in each state. In 2002, he became the first Santa Cruz County attorney ever elected to membership in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, whose membership is limited to only 500 attorneys in the entire United States. He is a member of the Monterey County and Santa Cruz County Bar Associations and a past president of the Santa Cruz County Bar Association. He has been designated as a Northern California “Super Lawyer” for each of the past three years. In 2006, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Santa Cruz County Trial Lawyers’ Association.
Fred Ebey is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Cruz County Bar Association, the Santa Cruz County Legal Aid Society, and has served as an officer or director for numerous charities including the Kidney Foundation, Little Helpers and the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County.
